Intel iSeries Processors and Quick Sync Video (QSV)

So, the Intel iSeries has been with us for while now and much informed comment has been written in the media about the blazingly fast perfromance at the 'Bit sand Bytes' level.  However, by way of a unique focus on this powerful CPU Series Quick Sync Video or QSV is one of the many features Intel built into the iSeries that is less recognised at the User level.  For many of us video media is having a major impact on our lifestyle, from movies to advertising streamed in our local shopping mall and subway stations, purchasing, training, real time streaming and simple 'how to do' clips the list is endless - the growth in the usage of video media in both commercial and industrial HMI applications is meteoric.  However video is still one of the most burdensome tasks a computer has to deal with.  Primed to deal with the CPU intensive task is Intel’s breakthrough technology ‘Quick Sync Video’, built right into the core of the 3rd generation iSeries Processors.

How it works..

Video content is typically compressed and encoded into a specific format when it is stored on hard drives, DVDs, camcorders, cell phones, or broadcast media. When you want to play that content, burn it onto a DVD or Blu-ray* disc, or copy it to your phone, it must first be decoded and then re-encoded in a new format, known as transcoding - a resource and time-intensive process. Intel Quick Sync Video accelerates decoding and encoding for a significantly faster conversion time, while also enabling the processor to complete other tasks, improving overall PC performance.

If you are doing a lot of media conversion or rendering, Intel QSV can shave huge amounts of time off of the exercise.  Benchmark tests against dedicated video processing solutions published in the public domain have shown that a 3 hour process could be reduced by upto half!

iSeries Equipment

If you are looking for a compact, fan-less platform the highly equipped SMART T6100 with a 2.1GHz CPU and a host of connectivity options, including WiFi the is ideal for running real-time HMI applications such as Indusoft Web Studio, particularly where video files are embedded into the application.  Similarly with SSD storage options and with up to 16GB of RAM the T6100 is an excellent platform for light to medium duty encoding/transcoding activities.  For Panel PC applications requiring video intensive performance the Nematron iPC offers many options with both i5 and i7 Series CPUs.
